Review meeting of DAPO at DAC

Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulwant Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police Navjot Singh Mahal today asked the officers of the civil and Police administration to wage a relentless battle against scourge of drugs till its last ounce was not wiped out from the district.
Presiding over a meeting to review the Drug Abuse Prevention Officer (DAPO) scheme, here today at the District Administrative Complex, the Commissioner of Police, Additional Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police said that people must be further roped in to support this pious mission of the state government, which aims at complete eradication of drugs from the district.
They said that no such program could achieve success without the active support and cooperation of people. They also said that the parents and kin of the drug addicts must shun the so-called social stigma attached to this problem and come forward for treatment of their dear ones.
Highlighting the significance of the DAPO scheme they said that the DAPO volunteers were assigned the task of raising awareness against drug abuse, identification of users, high-risk people and vulnerable sections.
They said that drug addicts were not criminals and were in fact victims, which need to be brought into the main fray through this initiative, for which the officers could play a key role.
They said that massive efforts have already been made to cut the supply line of drugs but perhaps for the first time in the globe a serious effort was being made to check the demand of drugs by motivating the people to be partners in this cause.
They said that the DAPOs were already motivating the drug users and their families to avail treatment facilities besides facilitating their treatment and counselling at drug de-addiction centres.
Likewise, they said that the DAPOs were also providing valuable feedback to the state government on the issue adding that the officers must have periodic review meetings with the DAPO volunteers to completely eradicate this curse from the district.
They said that the state government has already set the wheels in motion to create a mass movement against the drugs through an army of volunteers above the age of 18 years in every Mohalla/ Ward/ Village of the district.
On the occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner Jasbir Singh, DCP Gurmeet Singh, Sub Divisional Magistrate Paramvir Singh, Amit Kumar, Charumita, Sanjiv Sharma, Assistant Commissioner Shaiyari Malhotra, Civil Surgeon Rajesh Kumar Bagga and others were also present.
