To Honour Maharaja Ranjit Singh Awardee with Rs. 1 lakh

Firm resolve makes achieving milestones easier: Isha

Hoshiarpur, July 17:

The 101 players recently honoured by the Punjab Government with the ‘Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award’ include one from Hoshiarpur.

Disclosing this here today, the Deputy Commissioner Isha Kalia said that the Kayaking and Canoeing player Varinder Singh has brought laurels to the entire District.

The Deputy Commissioner met the player here today at the District Administrative Complex and extended congratulations to him.

The Deputy Commissioner who is also the President of the District Olympic Association also announced to honour the player with Rs. 1 lakh.

The Deputy Commissioner further said that firm resolve, Determination, Dedication and Commitment are necessary for achieving any milestone and that makes it significant for the youth hailing from the District to excel at both academic and sports fields.

The Deputy Commissioner also said that the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award has been started by the State Government with the intention to encourage the exceptional sporting talent that the State possesses.

The award includes Rs. 2 lakh cash, a blazer, a scroll and a trophy of Sher-e-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji.

On the occasion, Varinder Singh, who has 9 Gold, 9 Silver and 11 Bronze Medals to his name, said that he is a resident of the village depur which falls in the Mukerian Sub Division. He further divulged that despite belonging to a poor family, he continued working hard on his game which took him to showcase his prowess at the National and International level.

On the occasion, District Sports Officer Gurpreet Singh and District Public Relations Officer Hakam Thapar were also present.
