Puts new Mayor in tight spot, it will be not easy to escape or resolve the issue

@Amrit Sidhu Brar

Bathinda, 6 May 2021: Senior Congress leader Jagroop Singh Gill met Raman Goyal newly elected Mayor of the Bathinda MC on Thursday and in a well motivated move he took up the people’s agenda with her. He has put the newly elected Mayor in tight spot as it will be not easy to escape or resolve the issue as the matter is related with economically weaker sections and only eight months are left in the state assembly elections. Jagroop Gill was accompanied by Sukhdeep Singh Counsellor.

Jagroop Singh Gill has broached three very significant issues with the Mayor, which are directly connected with the larger interests of populace of the city and it is felt that there is a strong resentment in the citizens against the local body department concerning the implementation of these list of items.

The first issue raised by Jagroop Gill is related with the roughly 15000 (fifteen thousand) households of the city who are said to be fall under the category of the economically weaker sections. As per the contents of the memorandum submitted by Jagroop Gill “the local govt department had recently increased the rates of water supply and sewerage, which will badly affect the weaker sections, which are already facing financial constrains due to long lockdown period since the last one year”.  Jagroop Gill stressed that this issue should be discussed in the full house and a positive decision is taken to give relief to the citizens.

Another issue taken by Jagroop Singh Gill is related to withdrawal of sewerage and other works from the Triveni Company whose work is not satisfactory and it has been discussed in meetings number of times, as per the contents of memo.

Third issue raised by Jagroop Gill is waiving off the property tax for one year .i.e. from 31 March 2019 to 1st April 2020, which was said to be announced by FM during the meetings in the city. Jagroop Gill said “this promise made by FM should be fulfilled to give relief to the people”.

Once considered close to the Punjab Chief Ministers Capt Amarinder Singh family, Jagroop Singh Gill who is one of the most experienced leaders and had been instrumental in the victory of Manpreet Singh Badal as MLA from Bathinda. He has campaigned aggressively for MS Badal in 2017.

His claim to the post of Mayor was ignored by the Manpreet Singh Badal who is also Finance Minister of the state due to some unknown reasons. Jagroop Singh Gill is very much hurt over the decision of the Manpreet Badal team for ignoring his claim to the post of Mayor according to inside sources.

As per political observers, there is no doubt that Jagroop Singh Gill has a strong following and influence in the constituency, most importantly, he carries a tag of one of the honest congress leader of the area. He has always won the local bodies elections since 1979 and never lost any election.
