Amritsar Court convicts 11 Policemen and 2 others in Bikramjit murder case

Amritsar, July 5: Sessions Court, Amritsar, on Friday convicted 13 persons, including 11 policemen, in case of disappearance and later murder of convict Bikramjit Singh, who was kidnapped on May 7, 2014 from Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar, where he was undergoing treatment.

Later, his body was thrown in the Kiratpur Sahib Canal by the accused. Today this case was decided by the Court of Additional Session Judge Sh.Sandeep Singh Bajwa and Mr.APS Khera and RItu Kumar Appeared as Public Prosecutor and assisted the court.

On May 6, 2014 a FIR was registered at the Civil Lines Police Station, Amritsar, under Sections 222/223/224 of the IPC against convict Bikramjit Singh for escaping from Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, where he was being treated.

But on the next day it came to light that it was a case of kidnapping and the accused were officials of Punjab Police intelligence wing and they were booked under Sections 365/342 of the IPC for kidnapping Bikramjit.

During investigation of the case, Section 302/342 of the IPC were added to the FIR on May 15, 2014.

In this case, 14 persons, including 12 policemen, were accused of kidnapping and murder of Bikramjit and 13 of them were arrested. One of the accused, ASI Baljit Singh, was declared proclaimed offender.

During their investigation into the case, police initially arrested Makhtool Singh, Angrej Singh, Lakhwinder Singh and Amandeep Singh who were deployed to guard Bikramjit while he was at the hospital.

On May 10, 2014 a SIT was created to crack the case which was headed by Naresh Kumar, ADCP, Crime, Amritsar, with Balkar Singh, ACP, North, and Inspector Vidiya Sagar, in-charge CIA, being the other members.

The SIT arrested ASI Gulshanbir Singh and ASI Sawinder Singh on May 15, 2014 and during their interrogation they confessed that the body of Bikramjit was disposed off in Kiratpur Sahib Canal.

Deep Raj, another accused was arrested on May 22, 2014 while Jagtar Singh was apprehended on June 19, 2014. On August 5, 2014, Inspector Narang Singh, Head Constable Jagjit Singh, Head Constable Gurpreet Singh and Head Constable Lakhwinder Singh were arrested by the police.

On September 4, 2014, challan against the accused was presented and charges were framed on January 3, 2015. During trial, 52 witnesses recorded their statements.
